I was raised in Newark California, an east-bay suburb of San Francisco. My Dad, brother and I fished for cod in the ocean, catfish in the delta, sturgeon and striped bass in the bay, salmon in the Sacramento River, and hunted ducks and pheasants over golden retrievers throughout the central valley and Northen California.

After a few years service as a cold-warrior in the US Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM), a random series of events landed me in Missouri in 1981. My adopted home state fit me like a glove.  I bought and trained a golden (Josie), and joyously returned to hunting.  Once I added deer and turkey to the mix and got involved in conservation activism, it ballooned into a huge part of my life.

In recent years Jane and I bought a 400-acre farm near Moberly Missouri, on which we hunt deer and turkey, and grow hay and soybeans. I even dabbled in raising grassfed heirloom breed (Scottish Highland) cattle for a few years.
